90 Days Before Expiration

Watch for ATF Form 8 Part II in the mail

ATF mails this automatically ~90 days before expiration to your license mailing address. Do not wait for it to arrive โ€” confirm your mailing address on file is current.

If Form 8 not received 30 days before expiration, contact FFLC immediately

Email FFLC@atf.gov or call 1-866-662-2750. Do not assume the form is coming โ€” missing the deadline requires a full new application.

Verify all pre-filled information is accurate

Confirm business name, premises address, mailing address, and hours of operation are all correct before signing.

If premises address has changed, file ATF Form 5300.38 first

An Amended FFL (Form 5300.38) must be filed and approved BEFORE submitting the renewal if your business location has moved.

If business name or legal entity has changed, file a new ATF Form 7

FFLs are not transferable. Any change in ownership or legal entity โ€” even under the same name โ€” requires a brand new license application.

Completing the Form

Review and update Responsible Persons (RPs) list

Add or remove RPs as needed. Each new RP must complete Form 7/7CR Part B (Responsible Person Questionnaire) plus a signed letter from an active RP requesting the addition.

Answer all questions in Block C-D completely

Include firearms acquired and disposed counts for the current license period. Confirm activity is permitted under state and local law.

Include the correct renewal fee

Type 01/02: $90 ยท Type 03/06: $30 ยท Type 09: $3,000. Payment by check, money order, or credit card authorization on the form.

Sign and date the form

Must be signed by the sole proprietor, corporate officer, or partner. An unsigned form will not be processed.

Submission & After Filing

Mail completed Form 8 Part II postmarked BEFORE license expiration

The postmark date is what matters, not the date ATF receives it. Send certified mail to create a record.

Request a Letter of Authorization (LOA) if renewal will be pending at expiration

An LOA allows continued business operations for up to 6 months while your renewal is being processed. Request it from FFLC at time of submission.

Provide LOA copies to distributors and suppliers

Distributors may require proof of active licensing before fulfilling orders. Keep copies readily available to avoid business interruptions.

Do NOT continue firearms business operations after expiration without an approved LOA

Operating on an expired FFL without an LOA carries criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. 922. Stop all transfers immediately if license expires without LOA.

Follow up if not approved within 60 days

ATF targets 60-day processing. If no response, contact FFLC@atf.gov or 1-866-662-2750. Processing times may be longer due to current ATF staffing levels.
